The Pine Mountain Trail, located in FDR State Park, is open to hikers any time the park is open. You do not have to be a Pine Mountain Trail Association member to hike on the trail, nor do you have to pay to hike on the trail. You don't even have to be a PMTA member to join us on our monthly hikes. The PMTA sponsors monthly group led hikes (see HIKES on this site). There are several places along Ga. 190 and Ga. 354, as well as the parking lot at the WJSP-TV tower and off Hines Gap Road where one can park to hike on the trail (see MAPS). The only fee one must pay is the $3.00 Daily Use Fee (parking permit) that goes on your vehicle (unless you have an annual Georgia Park Pass), and you must have one of these on your rear view mirror while parked ANYWHERE with FDR State Park. Backpackers do have to pay for a Backcountry permit unless you are a PMTA member, in which case the fee is waived. (see the section on BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING for details, or our new FAQ section). Click here to see the benefits of being a member of the Pine Mountain Trail Association. The Pine Mountain Trail, a 23 mile footpath that crosses and follows the beautiful Pine Mountain ridge, offers clear crisp views of distant ridges in winter, with occasional snowfall, to the lush greens of summer ferns and foliage of lowland flora. Wildflowers are abundant and spring brings flowering dogwood, native azalea, mountain laurel and rhododendron. Fall brings bright and beautiful colors, changing from day to day. With the connector trails that form seven loops there are over 40 miles of hiking trails for your enjoyment.
