“Service is the Rent We Pay for Our Space on Earth”

PineMountainTrail.org is a site dedicated to the construction, support and maintenance of the Pine Mountain Trail, located in Harris and Meriwether counties of Georgia.

The Pine Mountain Trail,  located in FDR State Park, is open to hikers any time the park is open.  You do not have to be a Pine Mountain Trail Association member to hike on the trail, nor do you have to pay to hike on the trail. You don't even have to be a PMTA member to join us on our monthly hikes. The PMTA sponsors monthly group led hikes (see HIKES on this site).  There are several places along Ga. 190 and Ga. 354, as well as the parking lot at the WJSP-TV tower and off Hines Gap Road where one can park to hike on the trail (see MAPS). The only fee one must pay is the $3.00 Daily Use Fee (parking permit) that goes on your vehicle (unless you have an annual Georgia Park Pass), and you must have one of these on your rear view mirror while parked ANYWHERE with FDR State Park. Backpackers do have to pay for a Backcountry permit unless you are a PMTA member, in which case the fee is waived. (see the section on BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING for details, or our new FAQ section).

The Pine Mountain Trail, a 23 mile footpath that crosses and follows the beautiful Pine Mountain ridge, offers clear crisp views of distant ridges in winter, with occasional snowfall, to the lush greens of summer ferns and foliage of lowland flora.  Wildflowers are abundant and spring brings flowering dogwood, native azalea, mountain laurel and rhododendron. Fall brings bright and beautiful colors, changing from day to day. With the connector trails that form seven loops there are over 40 miles of hiking trails for your enjoyment.

IMPORTANT NOTE  for those coming to FDR State Park and the Pine Mountain Trail

The Pine Mountain Trail Association provides this website as a guide to the PMT and as a service to our members and the thousands who hike the Trail each year.

We gladly answer questions about backpacking and hiking the trails by contacting the PMTA through the phone numbers listed in the BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING section and by email.

However, as of February 15, 2008 we need to inform folks that we can no longer accurately tell you that all of FDR State Park will be open for use for your planned activities.  The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has decided to do a series of burns that will burn areas including both sides of some trails in places.

The first burn of 2008 was February 28th. This burn temporarily closed several miles of trail for two days, but will cause lasting visual impact to the trail routes.

The location, date, and times of future burns are yet to be determined and are subject to weather conditions.

The Pine Mountain Trail Association has voiced total opposition to these burns and tried to keep them away from the trails.  We will continue to oppose them, but for now we are told they are going to happen.

We will gladly help you plan your route but you need to contact FDR State Park at 706-663-4858 and ask the park managers if your plans could be impacted by park closures due to burns.

If you have hiked the burned sections and have a comment, please email the PMTA and the Georgia DNR links below:

Ronnie Eakins - Region 3 DNR Parks manager

Don McGhee FDR State Park manager

Chuck Gregory  DNR Resource Mgr (approved the burn)

Becky Kelley DNR Parks Director

If you would like to be updated via email on trail concerns and last-minute updates, please email us with "PMTA updates" as the subject line.
